The Sierra Club was chartered in California in 1892, as a hiking and social outdoors group. Today it is the oldest and most influential grassroots environmental organization in the nation. The Kansas Sierra Club, formed in 1975 , is one of 64 mostly state-based chapters of the national Sierra Club . All chapters share the same mission statement: To explore, enjoy, and protect the wild places of the earth; To practice and promote the responsible use of the earth’s ecosystems and resources; To educate and enlist humanity to protect and restore the quality of the natural and human environment; and To use all lawful means to carry out these objectives. The Kansas Chapter spans the urban and suburban areas surrounding Kansas City and Wichita in the eastern part of the state, through the Flint Hills region of central Kansas, and across the High Plains of western Kansas. Regional politics and the State Legislature are dominated by climate deniers, anti-vaxxers, and anti-democratic extremists. Our focus is on the global climate crisis, but our challenges also include protecting wildlife habitat, water resources and air quality from the impacts of industrial agriculture. Ongoing oil and gas production has led to concerns about hydraulic fracturing and energy-related policy issues. Still, Kansas is among the top 5 states in wind energy generation and with solar energy production becoming more common, local governments are developing siting guidelines for utility-scale solar projects. New members are welcome, and all members are invited to contribute their ideas and initiatives. General Meetings and most Executive Committee meetings are open to all.
